Danish Mathias Larsen, new rider of the Kometa Cycling Team

Mathias Larsen (Copenhagen, 2 May 1999) will race next season in the Kometa Cycling Team. The Danish rider is the fifth new face of a project that has already reached the Spanish Sergio García and Alejandro Ropero and the Italian Alessandro Fancellu, the three from the U23 team of the Foundation, and the Hungarian Erik Fetter, who comes to the team from the Pannon Cycling Team.

Larsen has competed in 2018 in his country’s Team Waoo, a project also in the continental category to which he arrived after spending a year in ColoQuick. Mathias is the son of Nicolaj Bo Larsen, former professional racer between 1996 and 2002, double national champion and winner of a stage of the 1996 Giro d’Italia with a finish in Biella. “It’s always good to have a former rider at home, because he gives you a lot of advice on how to compete or how to train, but there’s also the reading that the former rider is also your father. And above all he is your father”, jokes the new cyclist of the Kometa Cycling Team.

As a rider, Larsen defines himself as a complete cyclist, with a good top speed in small groups and capable of passing low mountain heights. Classics races are his favourite ones and a victory in one of the five monuments is part of his sporting dreams. “I really liked the racing style of Alberto Contador, a very offensive cyclist, attacker, without fear of losing… I loved his racing style, he is one of the greats of history without a doubt and it is a real honour to race in his team and that of Ivan Basso, although as a rider I am very far from that profile. I like Peter Sagan or Julian Alaphilippe,” says Larsen.

“This season I have had the opportunity to coincide in several races with the Kometa Cycling Team and the truth is that it is a team that I liked because of the way they run, because of the way they face competition. They have a great structure, they are serious and without a doubt it is the best place to continue growing as a rider. This year three of their cyclists jump into the WorldTour, no less. I personally believe that you can only get to the WorldTour when you are truly ready to do so and I believe that the Kometa Cycling Team is the best place,” explains the new cyclist of the Alberto Contador Foundation’s continental line-up.

“Ivan Basso called me and we had a great conversation about me and the team a few weeks ago. The next day we talked again and finally he offered me a contract. The truth is that it was something that gave me immense joy and I didn’t have to think much about it. I accepted the proposal and we closed the deal for this 2020 season,” explains Larsen.

The new Kometa Cycling Team rider is a great friend of the recent world champion, his compatriot Mads Pedersen. “Denmark is certainly a small country and in the end we all know each other. We train a lot of times together, we also have a relationship off the bike. Sometimes we even play video games on the net. His rainbow jersey is very important to continue popularizing this sport in our country and on a very personal side, I am especially glad that the world champion is one of my Friends”.
