Diego Pablo Sevilla, between the great protagonists of a first stage in which Martón Dina gives up time after a crash

41ª Vuelta a Burgos
Stage 1: Burgos – Burgos/Cerro del Castillo (162 km)

Diego Pablo Sevilla from Madrid was one of the great protagonists of the inaugural day of the Vuelta a Burgos 2019. The rider from San Martín de la Vega took part along with four other riders in the breakaway that led the race for almost 150 kilometres. The negative side of this first day of competition on Burgos roads came from the fall that took place eight kilometres away for the end in which the Hungarian Márton Dina was involved. A cast without serious consequences in the physical, strictly sporting and in terms of classification, resulted in a waste of time.

“The wind brought a lot of tension to this first stage. It was a pity that in those last kilometres the fall caught Márton. Juan Camacho and I quickly stopped to wait for him to lose as little time as possible”, explains the manchego Isaac Cantón about the setback caused by the Magyar cyclist. Dina would give 52 seconds in a finish line where the best classified among the riders of the continental team of the Alberto Contador Foundation was Canton, who finished 47 seconds in the 56th place. In the crazy final of Cerro del Castillo the Italian Giacomo Nizzolo (Dimension Data) would achieve the victory and consequently would reach the first purple leader jersey.

Seville, Cantabrian Jesús Ezquerra (Burgos-BH), Basque Jokin Aranburu (Euskadi Foundation), Israel’s Roy Goldstein (Israel Cycling Academy) and Russian Stepan Kuriyanov (Gazprom) made up a very good fifth that amassed up to three and a half minutes of margin over a bunch in which Team Ineos, Androni Giocattoli and Movistar led the singing voice. Some changes in pace made by Kuriyanov within the last 25 kilometers, in a winding terrain, not at all favourable, took Aranburu down and revived a breakaway that by then was running with less than 50 seconds of margin. The Russian himself would give in later, facing the first pass through the Alto del Castillo, where Ezquerra stood out alone to be hunted shortly after. The stage, by then, had eight kilometers left. The moment in which the fall took place.

“I felt good and I feel like trying again,” says Sevilla. “I am very happy to be able to continue letting me see and star in a leak in a race of such a high level as I could do in the Vuelta a la Comunitat Valenciana or in the Giro de Sicilia. When in the last 25 kilometres we were relaying very hard I could pass without any problem, I could feel myself strongly. In the end I think we all thought about doing something more alone so that we could be seen a little more. I waited for the first step on the steep slope, first I tried it down and then up, but in the last corner Ezquerra passed me inside, I didn’t expect it, and he left me seated”.

Along with Cantón, both Juan Camacho and José Antonio García from Granada would reach the finish line, the team’s trump card for the arrivals in this Vuelta a Burgos. In the last few very tense kilometres, after a hitch, the Andalusian was hit on a wheel and suffered a broken radius. García quickly received the support of Sevilla, who lent him his bike. But he ran out of options to get in later in the finish.

Márton Dina: “I feel good, it was nothing. Once I could put the chain in place, I had to face a time trial of almost ten kilometers. In the end the loss of time was 52 seconds.  I’m disappointed. I felt really good. Of course I’m not a sprinter, but in a finish like today I think I could have finished in the top 20”.

Looking ahead to this Wednesday, the Castilian race faces a second stage of 155 kilometres that will join the towns of Gumiel de Izán and Lerma. The fraction invites to a script similar to the one developed this Tuesday, with a leak that challenges an outcome to the sprint in the frame of a broken terrain and exposed to the action of the wind. The finish, however, will take place on a small steep slope with ramps of 6%, paved and with a small narrowing of the road with 400 metres to go under the Arco de la Prisión (Arch of the Prison).
