Fran Contador: “El balance es muy positivo”

La Fundación Alberto Contador ha cumplido su segunda temporada trabajando para apoyar el ciclismo de base con un balance muy positivo. Fran Contador, responsable directo de su funcionamiento, se muestra orgulloso de lo hecho hasta ahora y confía en consolidar un proyecto que crece cada día con el objetivo de ofrecer a los chicos que quieren empezar a practicar ciclismo la posibilidad de integrarse en una escuela que les ofrece la posibilidad de realizar toda su carrera como ciclistas, desde los primeros pasos hasta llegar a ser corredores profesionales.

¿Cuál es el balance este segundo año de actividad?

Es muy positivo, porque tras dos años de trabajo, el Flex-Junior se ha convertido en el equipo referencia de la categoría, mientras que con los Sub 23, que empezaban este año, tenía un poco más de incertidumbre de si serían capaces de adaptarse a la categoría. Afortunadamente, el equipo Specialized no tan sólo se ha integrado bien en el pelotón, sino que hemos sido uno de los equipos a seguir por nuestra manera de hacer las cosas. Y con la Escuela de Ciclismo Plaza Éboli de Pinto estamos muy contentos de cómo está funcionando, porque para este año ya se han apuntado muchos más niños, prácticamente el doble que el primer año, y esto es el mejor síntoma de que se están haciendo bien las cosas. Era un año complicado y lo hemos pasado con nota, el balance es muy bueno.

-¿Cuáles son los planes y las expectativas para la próxima temporada?

Con los Juniors queremos hacerlo como lo hemos hecho desde el principio, porque el listón está muy alto. En 2013 se empezó muy bien y en 2014 incluso se ha mejorado la forma de trabajar en carrera. Lo único que le pido a Félix García Casas es igualar lo hecho este año. En cuanto a la categoría Sub-23, el objetivo es lograr que el equipo esté más metido en las carreras, tener más mentalidad de disputar cada una de ellas y creernos que podemos hacerlo. Además, queremos coger experiencia en el extranjero repitiendo la participación en Bretaña y yendo a carreras como el Valle de Aosta, el Tríptico de las Ardenas o la Ronda de L’Isard.

Después de la Escuela y los equipos Junior y Sub-23, ¿cuáles son los próximos pasos?

-Este año queremos empezar a trabajar con la categoría cadete, que es la única que nos falta para completar todo el abanico de edades hasta llegar a profesionales.

-¿Entra en los planes de la Fundación Alberto Contador crear un equipo profesional?

Sí, ya lo hemos dicho en alguna ocasión, pero no tenemos prisa, es un objetivo que no nos obsesiona. Lo importante es seguir trabajando con el ciclismo base y, si seguimos así, la categoría profesional llegará tarde o temprano. Todo depende de encontrar al patrocinador que pueda hacer viable el proyecto, pero lo que sí queremos es que cuando lo hagamos, el equipo sea de máximo nivel, tal como estamos haciendo con nuestros equipos de formación y siempre garantizado su continuidad.

-¿Está contento de la respuesta que ha recibido el proyecto de la Fundación por parte de los patrocinadores?

-Muy, muy contento. La clave de que este proyecto funcione es no sólo tener meros patrocinadores, sino marcas que consideren a los equipos ciclistas como algo suyo. Tenemos la fortuna de que nuestros patrocinadores están muy implicados, trabajan con nuestros chicos y son los que garantizan el éxito del proyecto. Creo que estos equipos de base no son sólo una mera plataforma publicitaria, sino también un buen laboratorio para experimentar y  desarrollar los productos de una marca y nosotros les aportamos ese valor añadido.

-¿Qué significa para Alberto Contador ver en funcionamiento los primeros equipos ciclistas que llevan su nombre?

-A mí me satisface mucho ver a Alberto hablar con orgullo de sus equipos ciclistas a la gente del mundo profesional, a sus compañeros de equipo, a sus directores o a cualquiera que le pregunta por esto. Se le ve con muchísima ilusión y es algo que le motiva cada vez más, lo cual también es muy importante para la viabilidad y el futuro de todo nuestro proyecto.

The Alberto Contador Foundation has completed its second season working to support cycling base with very positive results. Fran Contador, directly responsible for its operation, is proud of what has been done so far and hopes to consolidate a project that is growing every day with the aim of providing children who want to start cycling the ability to integrate in a school that offers the possibility to do their entire career as cyclists, from the first steps to become professional racers.

-What is the balance of this second year of activity?

-It’s very positive, because after two years of work, the Flex-Junior has become the team reference of its category, while with the U23, which began this year, I had a little uncertain whether they would be able to adapt to the category. Fortunately, the Specialized team not only has integrated well into the peloton, but we have been one of the teams to watch for our way of doing things. And with the Pinto’s Plaza Eboli School of Cycling we are very happy on how it’s working because this year have already signed many more children, nearly double than the first year, and this is the best sign that they are doing well. It has been a challenging year and we have passed it with flying colors, the balance is very good.

What are the plans and expectations for next season?

With the Juniors we want to do it as we have done from the beginning, because the stakes are very high. In 2013 they started very well and in 2014 even they have improved the way of working in races. The only thing I ask Felix Garcia Casas is to equal what they have done this year. As for the U-23, the aim is that the team will be more into racing, having more minded to dispute each race and believe that we can do it. We also want to gain experience abroad repeating participation in Bretagne and going to races like Valle d’Aosta, the triptych of the Ardennes or the Ronde de L’Isard.

-After the Cycling School and Junior and U23 teams, what are the next steps?

-This Year we want to start working with the cadet category, which is the only one we need to complete the full range of ages up to professionals.

-¿Has Alberto Contador Foundation plans to create a professional team?

-Yes, we have already said this on other occasions, but not in a hurry, it is a goal that no haunts us. The important thing is to continue working with the base cycling and if we continue like this, professional category will come sooner or later. Everything depends on finding the sponsor who can make the project viable, but what I want is that when we do, the team was of the highest level, as we are doing with base teams and always guaranteed continuity.

-Are you pleased with the response it has received the Foundation project by sponsors?

-Very, very happy. The key of this project is not just having mere sponsors, but brands that consider cycling teams as their own. We are fortunate that our sponsors are very involved, working with our kids, because is what ensure project success. I think these base teams are not just a mere advertising platform, but also a good laboratory to experiment and develop the products of a brand and we bring them that added value.

-What does Alberto Contador see in operation the first cycling teams that bear his name?

-I’m very pleased to see Alberto speaking about his teams with pride to people of professional world, to his teammates, his sport directors or anyone who ask him for it. He looks thrilled with and something that motivates him more and more, which is also very important for the viability and future of our entire project.
