About wind and breakaways in Ontur: Minoia, sixth in the GP Primavera

Gran Premio Primavera / Copa de España Élite Sub2: Ontur – Ontur (166 km)

The Elite U23 Spanish Cup returned this Sunday in La Mancha with a Gran Premio Primavera of Ontur in which the wind appeared during its development and in which finally triumphed a breakaway where Sebastiano Minoia gave presence to the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team U23, formation in the end winner of the classification by teams. Diego Uriarte (Finisher) won solo, slightly ahead of Asier González (Rias Baixas), and Minoia finished sixth in his best result in the Spanish calendar. Eighth, Fran Muñoz.

It was the route through Fuente-Álamo, Las Anorias, Pétrola and Corral-Rubio that marked a turning point in the development of this edition, with a wind action that, exploited among others by the U23 structure of the Contador Foundation, caused a multitude of cuts in the main peloton. At the front, quickly swallowing up a previous breakaway, a group of about 25 riders in which Cup leader Ricardo Zurita was not travelling. For about twenty kilometres, a vibrant battle ensued.

With the head of the race grouped together, in the last 45 kilometres, on the climb to the Alto de La Galera, a group of nine riders was formed, including Sebastiano Minoia. It was the good breakaway, always with more than a minute’s margin over a main peloton that fed the gap with a big bunch; a breakaway in which a selection would develop on the final circuit of La Cañá in which Diego Uriarte and Asier González stood out during the penultimate lap. From the peloton Fran Muñoz, winner here in 2022, led an acceleration with a view to reaching that breakaway, a search that could not materialise.

“Personally, this edition has been good for me. Already at kilometre 40 the headwind and crosswind started to blow, there were a lot of breaks and the peloton split into many groups. Fran and I were able to be in the leading group, about twenty riders, which then grew to 40 riders. On a climb there were some movements, I also started and the breakaway was formed. We rode well, quite hard, but then it was selected. My legs were good, although for the sprint I lacked spark because I had worked a lot on the fans beforehand”, said Sebastiano Minoia.
