Álex Martín finishes the Giro Ciclístico della Valle d’Aosta in the top ten: sensational sixth position

57º Giro Ciclístico della Valle d´Aosta
Etapa 3: Fénis – Valnontey (149 km)

A demanding, albeit compressed, edition of the Giro del Valle d’Aosta came to an end on Sunday, with Álex Martín putting in a great performance by finishing in the top ten of a final general classification in which New Zealander Reuben Thompson (FDJ) won. Martín, finally sixth overall, and Fernando Tercero reached the finish line in the same group as the leader, seven and a half minutes behind the winner of the stage, the German Greg Steinhauser (Tyrol).

In the final stage, although the leader received some attacks and was also involved in a crash on a descent from which he recovered without problem, the protagonist for the fight for the stage was a breakaway. Attempts to form the breakaway were constant from the start. The assault of a first group of sixteen riders that fought to open distance in the first fifteen kilometres did not succeed, but another numerous movement would, twenty riders on this occasion, who by kilometre 33 were riding with two minutes of margin.

Álex Martín, rider of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team U23: “I am very happy. I value very much this sixth position in a race like this. The level was very high and in the end every day was a new adventure. It is a special race, without a doubt. And to see us in the top positions is an important source of motivation for the challenges to come”.

Rafa Díaz Justo, team manager: “Álex has been very, very good. The first day he was with the favourites and the next two days he was very intelligent. We are happy with this race, but we have to keep working with the same humility with which we always work”.
