III Xavi Tondo Memorial
Valls-Valls (172 km)

The Andalusian Juan Pedro López has once again been the best classified of the Polartec-Kometa riders in the Xavi Tondo de Valls Memorial. The Spaniard finished fifth in the penultimate round of the Spanish Cup, in which only he and the’aldro’ Jesús Arozarena, who leads the U23 general standings, and who finished immediately afterwards, have a mathematical chance of winning the elite title in the final round, the Macario Grand Prix.

In Valls, where the victory was played by a group of about 30 units, was won by the Belarusian Dzmitry Zhyhunou (Lizarte), while his team-mate Antonio Soto strengthened his leadership by finishing third. The also Andalusian José Antonio García signed an outstanding thirteenth place in the sprint.

In an edition marked by numerous attacks, a very crazy race, the Polartec-Kometa U23 did not want to leave the opportunity to bet on the strategy including three riders, Sergio Garcia, Alejandro Ropero and Jose Antonio Garcia, in a numerous and interesting escape of about 35 units that ended up being neutralized.

“About twelve kilometres from the finish line we had a little mishap that upset our plans for the end, where you wanted to play our cards with Juan Pedro in front of the general classification, as Alejandro Ropero punctured. In the end, Juanpe and José Antonio had to face each other to cover the leaks. That, in the face of the goal, with a dynamic of many attacks, is an additional wear and tear,” concluded director Rafa Diaz Justo.

In one week the Macario Grand Prix of Alcalá de Henares will be held, the last race of the 2018 Spanish Cup.
